An Emotional & Angsty Read That Will Require A Little Patience. Prepare For A Few Tears. Brett Is Flawed – The Quintessential Burnout Rocker – And He Makes Some Big Mistakes. Their HEA Is A Challenge That Seems Almost Impossible To Achieve. Don’t Forget To Download The Free Bonus Epilogue Via The Link At The Back Of The Book. This series is a spin-off of The Replacement War, the sixth and final book in the My Favorite Band series. That is Gage and Lexi’s story. Tyler Caldwell, bass player for Capital Kingsmen, is introduced in that book. He takes part in a month-long reality TV show in which ten contestants are locked in a house without access to the outside world. It is a contest to find the new bass player for MFB. Book one of this series begins just before Tyler’s participation in The Replacement War, then picks up again two years later.ABOUT THE CAPITAL KINGSMEN SERIES:Capital Kingsmen is an LA-based rock band that is currently on a sold out tour. They like black licorice bites, chicken fingers, crispy fries, cheap scotch, and lemons on hand before they go on stage to play their hearts out for their fans. The guys are all handsome, so there are always plenty of eager female fans on hand. The band members include:• Tommy Stevenson: vocals• Brett Pitzer: drums• Dustin Kingston: lead guitar• Tyler Caldwell: bassTommy has always been the driving force behind the band. He is forever planning and pushing them all. Sometimes he pushes too hard. He isn’t necessarily nice. It was his idea for Tyler to participate in The Replacement War, and he insisted even though Tyler was not happy with the idea for a few reasons. Tommy insists that even though Tyler will get a lot of hate for his deception on the show, there is no such thing as bad publicity. Tommy enjoys the company of women, and he enjoys the choices that fame now affords him. Though he might not have had trouble finding company for the night before they achieved so much success, now women throw themselves at him and his bandmates. He and Tyler had been best buds in these efforts for years, but all that changed when Tyler ran into Dani in Milwaukee, just two months before his appearance on the reality show. Brett and Tommy got even tighter then, and the two best friends head out to the bars and clubs together, almost inseparable. Dustin is in a long-term relationship with Amanda. The guys have been together since their teens, though they went by the name Dust to Dust at the time. Seventeen year old Tyler and nineteen year old Tommy were both part of the local scene in LA, and eventually became friends after bumping into one another at shows. Tommy invited Tyler to join him and his friend in a band. Tommy knew eighteen year old Brett from music school and asked him to audition on drums. At that time they went by Kingsmen. When the guitarist left for college, Tommy asked Dustin to step in. Their name soon evolved into Capital Kingsmen, as they are known today. The four bandmates quickly formed a strong bond and have become more like brothers over time. They fight and they party and they make music together. They have come a long way since then. The guys all dropped out of college when they got their first contract. They put out their first album on a small label, but it was when Ashmark signed them that their success began to take off. They were a fairly well-established band when Tyler auditioned for MFB on the reality show, and though it was only a publicity stunt, it worked. Tyler’s celebrity skyrocketed, and the band’s success did as well. They are managed by Karl. Trevor is their rep at Ashmark Records, their label.FROM ASK ME LATER:This is the prequel to the first book in the series. It is the beginning of Tyler Caldwell and Danielle Watson’s story.Tyler Caldwell, twenty-seven, plays bass for the Capital Kingsmen. At seventeen, he was a skinny band nerd who bussed tables at Carne’s, a Mexican restaurant chain in LA. He went away to college but always regretted not getting the chance to kiss Dani, his good friend and the hostess at Carne’s. Nevertheless life went on for Tyler and he began transforming into the rock god he is today when he began working out in his early twenties. He owns a home in Los Angeles, but spends about two thirds of his time working away from home.Danielle Watson, twenty-six, has worked as the assistant venue manager at a 20,000 seat Milwaukee arena for two years now. She had followed her ex-fiancé Nate from LA to the Midwest. After three and a half years together, they didn’t quite make it to the alter. Danielle might have returned home to LA after the breakup if not for the job she loves. It keeps her busy, which is good because she hasn’t been with anyone since she split with Nate just over a year ago. When Danielle fills in for her boss as the venue manager one night, it means that she will be interacting directly with the bands and their managers, ensuring all their needs are met. She recalls that the Capital Kingsmen are headlining the sold out show, but isn’t overly familiar with the group. When one of the band members seems to recognize her, it takes a minute to realize that the hunky bass player is her old friend from Carne’s.At sixteen, Dani had worked as a hostess at the restaurant. Her close friend Tyler repeatedly tried to ask her out, and although she felt a little something for him, she wasn’t convinced he was serious so she always joked and blew him off. She lost touch with him after he went away to college, and she went away to college herself one year later. It has been ten years since she last saw Tyler, yet she feels even more attracted to the man he has become. Tyler says he regrets never getting to kiss her, then asks her to be his date at the after party. He loves to shock her, and claims to never get tired of watching her reactions.Danielle may still be attracted to Tyler, but finally moving on after Nate is a big step. As she toys with her answer, she discovers that Tyler is more confident and assertive than he had been in his youth. She likes it, and she likes him. But even if she says yes – knowing full well what will happen between them tonight if she does – she knows he will be back on the road in the morning. The idea of pursing anything further with him isn’t realistic.Tyler and Dani’s story is a sweet second chance romance. They have great chemistry. They have both grown a lot in the last decade, but their attraction to one another has only increased over time. Gone are their innocent and youthful days. They are both very adult about their night together; Danielle has realistic expectations. There is just the tiniest hint of angst to keep the story interesting. The story is well-written. The plot is simple. The characters are nicely developed given the length. The story is told in first person in Dani’s POV. I rate this short story 4.5 stars.FROM NO COMMITEMENT:As the story opens, it is roughly two months since the night Tyler and Dani reunited in Milwaukee. They hadn’t wanted to say goodbye, but given the long distance scenario they faced, they agreed to make no commitment. They are each free to see other people, to keep things low pressure. They hope to spend some time together after Tyler’s tour ends, at which point they will consider taking the next step in their relationship. Despite their agreement to not commit, neither has seen anyone else. Tyler and Dani text and Facetime daily, getting to know one another on a deeper level. Still, neither is ready to admit the depth of their feelings for the other, and they have only managed to spend one weekend together since that first night. But Danielle has a secret, and she is clueless as to how Tyler will react when she finally tells him. She wants to do it in person, and it is killing her to keep waiting for the next chance to see him. So when they are just days away from their reunion and Tyler tells her he is going to be on a reality TV show and won’t be able to see her after all, she is in a world of pain. She is pregnant with his child, but to tell him now, after waiting so many weeks, will look petty and manipulative. She begs him to take a stand for himself and points out how badly he will be portrayed once his deception is known, but he insists he has no control over his schedule. He says he must go along with everything his band and his label want. When Tyler dismisses Dani so easily, she finally realizes what a relationship with him would look like – and what kind of father he would be. When he leaves the reality show and hops on a plane to Europe to embark on a two year tour, she is devastated and entirely alone. Her family is all back in LA, and she has a baby to raise all on her own. Ford Pruitt is new to the marketing department at work. He befriends her, and she tells him everything. He might not be Tyler, but he wants to offer her the kind of life that her baby deserves. Two years later, Capital Kingsmen return to LA and Tyler is a changed man. He is broody and grouchy, and he has come to resent his career for taking away the one thing he ever really wanted: Dani. He had tried to reach her, and he has tried to move on, but still she occupies his thoughts. He heads to Milwaukee to find her, but doesn’t receive the happy reception he had expected. The couple has seemingly insurmountable obstacles, but they eventually find a happy ending. Don’t forget to download the free bonus epilogue via the link at the back of the book.IN THIS BOOK:This book opens about three years after Tyler and Dani ran into one another in Milwaukee. It is the day after book one closes with Tyler’s proposal to Dani, which had been the day before CK heads out on tour again. Luna, their daughter, is about two and a half. Dani now works for the band as Karl’s assistant. Dustin and Amanda have a five month old baby girl, Maya, and Amanda will help out during the tour by watching Luna while Dani works. Tommy and Brett are the only remaining bachelors in the band, and they aren’t thrilled with watching their good friends settle down. They don’t understand why Dustin and Tyler would give up endless parties and one night stands for a life with just one woman. While this time around Tyler and Dustin will each have a private bus with their families, Tommy and Brett plan to make their tour bus a non-stop party. The three month tour has thirty-seven dates. The first stop is a private gig in Phoenix for the tenth anniversary party of BR Tech Industries.Hannah Hartman, twenty-two, doesn’t trust easily. She and her sister Brianna lost their parents when they were just four and ten, respectively, and they ended up separated in the court system. Growing up in foster care wasn’t exactly a good experience, but when Brianna was of age she had adopted Hannah, finally bringing the sisters back together. They didn’t have much, but they had each other. Brianna had been almost like a mother to Hannah. Brianna was organized and working her way up with her job as a research assistant at BR Tech Industries, while Hannah was taking classes during the day and bartending by night. Photography had been Hannah’s passion, but she was studying social work in order to help children that were in the same position she had been in as a child.Things had become harder once Chance came along. Brianna had won a chance to see her favorite band, Capital Kingsmen, and when her favorite drummer showed interest, she wasn’t about to let the opportunity pass. It was a chance meeting and the chance of a lifetime, so when it turned out she was pregnant and delivered a beautiful baby boy, she named him Chance Michael Pitzer. Brianna hadn’t yet been able to connect with the baby’s father and share the news, but she thought it was fate when his band was scheduled to play the private gig at her company’s ten year anniversary party in Phoenix. But fate had another idea in mind when Brianna was in an accident just three days beforehand, leaving Hannah with a nine month old baby she cannot afford to care for.Hannah hated the Capital Kingsmen for everything they represented – their loose ways with women and the babies they left behind. If it hadn’t been Brianna’s wish that Chance be raised by his natural parents, Hannah might have avoided approaching Brett with the news. But she loved her sister too much to disrespect her wishes and lacked the resources to provide Chance the life he deserved. She reluctantly went to that anniversary party in her sister’s place, and she left the ball in Brett’s court.Brett Pitzer, thirty, cannot imagine giving up the bachelor lifestyle. Commitment and families are not for him. He had a strict upbringing that left him with a lot of self-doubt, though he does a pretty good job of masking it. He hardly speaks to his family, so his bandmates fill that void for him. He doesn’t understand what happened to soften Dustin and Tyler, but he is thankful that he still has Tommy. The pair are almost inseparable. Tommy enjoys his beer and gummy bears, but weed is Brett’s choice of escape. That might be the reason that he doesn’t feel things the way most people do, or maybe he was always like that. Either way, he prefers to feel numb. So when a mousy looking brunette approaches him at the meet and greet on the first night of the tour and tells him that his son’s mother is dying in a nearby hospital, he hardly knows what to feel about it. Mostly he just wants it all to go away.If it were up to Tommy, Brett would throw some money at the problem and move on, but Tyler and Dustin are more concerned about Chance than Brett’s ability to live the high life. Brett struggles to do what is right, but he knows all too well that he is his own worst enemy. He believes that he will eventually ruin everything and push people away, so Hannah and Chance are probably better off without him. Brett waivers between stepping up and walking away, but never fully embraces either option. On top of that, he feels attracted to Hannah. Like Brianna, she seems different than all the other girls. More real, more honest. And Hannah isn’t afraid to tell him what she really thinks. But as his son’s aunt and caretaker, he cannot simply treat her like a one night stand. Getting intimate with Hannah necessarily means something more, which is something Brett just isn’t good at. The couple has a difficult road travel, and like with Tyler’s story, Tommy isn’t exactly helpful. Brett has a lot of growing up to do before he can contemplate bigger things like fatherhood and commitment. He is lost. Hannah is lost as well, unsure what her future holds with the sudden loss of her sister. She must find her footing in the aftermath, creating a path forward amidst all the uncertainty. Eventually, however, the couple earns a happy ending. Don’t forget to download the free bonus epilogue via the link at the back of the book. The next book in the Capital Kingsmen series, No Comment, is Tommy’s story.Wow! This book isn’t the typical romance. It is real and very messy. The story is not easy to read at times. It is tragic and deep, so expect a few tears. There are some horrible decisions that are almost unbearable to read about. Brett is the quintessential burnout rocker. He lives for playing his drums and partying. He mostly goes along for the ride; he isn’t in the habit making important decisions. His life is a mess, empty of meaning, and he is best at avoiding responsibility. This story revolves around Brett and his firm commitment to the bachelor lifestyle. His background remains a little fuzzy (though the free bonus epilogue sheds a little light on it), but it is clear that he is damaged in some way. He doesn’t trust himself – and he doesn’t trust anyone, other than his bandmates, to have the wherewithal to stick with him through the bad times. That is why a life of one night stands makes sense to him. He can handle a good time; it is responsibility and commitment he is afraid of. He is his own worst enemy.Brett has been evading responsibility and his own feelings for years, and the real question for him is whether or not he actually wants to grow up and put the party days behind before they get the best of him. Becoming a father should be his wakeup call, but he is so out of touch with his own feelings that the moment slips by. He must finally take a stand for himself rather than following Tommy. He must choose to make a change, rather than seeing himself forced into a situation he never wanted in the first place. He really doesn’t deserve Hannah. His only saving grace is that the power of love might finally reform him, opening him up to a colorful world filled with possibilities.Hannah struggles with guilt as life moves on after Brianna’s death. Brianna would have loved the life that Hannah suddenly finds herself living, so enjoying it seems wrong. She also feels week and dependent despite the strength that Brianna firmly believed she had. Hannah doesn’t want to accept charity, but then again Chance deserves more than she can provide; he deserves the life that his father can provide for him. The idea that Brett might take Chance away at the end of the tour is devastating, though. It leaves her lost and feeling out of control. She has learned the hard way that nothing lasts forever, so she is on pins and needles in the face of so much change in her life. But Brett is slow to come around to fatherhood. He is inconsistent in his attention to Chance. Hannah may find herself raising Chance alone when all is said and done. In spite of her ingrained hatred of the man, Hannah falls in and out of love with Brett, who does a great job at sabotaging their happiness. She does her best to honor her sister throughout, even when it is difficult. She does exhibit strength, to the extent possible given her dependence upon Brett. And it takes a considerable amount of strength to allow Brett into her life.On the surface, Tyler’s and Brett’s stories have a number of similarities. Both men are surprised to learn that they are fathers. Both Dani and Brianna had kept their pregnancies a secret from the rocker fathers. Finally, Tommy does his best to sway both of his friends towards the party lifestyle. But the similarities stop there. Tyler and Brett are two very different people. Brett has a poor relationship with his family, while Tyler is on speaking terms with his. Brett never had a relationship with the mother of his child, whereas Tyler and Dani had crushed on one another as teens and had begun a casual relationship when Dani got pregnant. Brett recalls something special about Chance’s mother, but she dies just as he learns about the baby. He is left to pick up the pieces with a child he hadn’t known about and the aunt who is the only other family his son has left. Fatherhood might have been unexpected for Tyler, but he takes to the concept immediately. The responsibility and weight of the situation transform him. He has every intention of being an active part of Luna’s life. Brett, on the other hand, is terrified of the concept of fatherhood. He takes a passive role. He is married to the idea of remaining a bachelor, and he is reluctant to let go of his freedom and his way of life. Brett’s situation is complicated, particularly since he hasn’t quite accepted his role in Chance’s life.Brett and Hannah’s story is an emotional and angsty read that will require a little patience. Prepare for a few tears. Brett is a flawed character that makes some big mistakes, so their HEA is a challenge that seems almost impossible to achieve. The story is well-written. The plot is fairly simple. The characters are real and three-dimensional. They are carefully crafted. The story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Brett and Hannah. I rate this book 4.5 stars.I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
